Sharon Dogruel has spent 32 years in education, working with students, teachers, and policy makers to improve learning in K-12 education. Beginning as a high school chemistry and physics instructor, she chaired the science department and initiated projects to improve student performance in mathematics and science. While teaching, she began working in Science Education at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), eventually joining the Laboratory full time as a team leader. There she led the design, development, and evaluation of an array of programs that include the Teacher Opportunities to Promote Science (TOPS) program and the Critical Issues Forum, as example. She joined the Public Education Department in 1998 as the Program Manager for Curriculum, Instruction, and Learning Technologies and was responsible for the revision and implementation of the K-12 academic content standards, the development of programs and resources for the New Mexico Statewide Reading Initiative with the award of New Mexico’s Reading First state plan, and the integration of technology and virtual learning to improve education for all New Mexico students. She currently directs The Education Center, a non-profit organization that provides information and resources to address closing the achievement gap.
